Romania supports EU integration of Ukraine, Republic of Moldova and Georgia

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis announced on Tuesday that Romania fully supports the integration of Ukraine, Republic of Moldova and Georgia into the European Union (EU), according See News. 

“The place of these partners of the EU is within the European family, and Romania will do its best for this to become reality,” Iohannis wrote on Twitter.

Romanian foreign minister Bogdan Aurescu also posted a message in favour of the three countries’ integration with the EU.

“The EU is not complete without Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova and Georgia; they all deserve full membership,” Aurescu wrote in a social media post.

It comes as Ukraine submitted on Monday, an official request for “immediate” membership as it defends itself from Russia’s invasion.

In an open letter, eight EU countries called for granting Ukraine the EU candidate country status swiftly and opening the process of negotiations. The letter is signed by the presidents of Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, and Slovenia, Romania-Insider reports. 

Republic of Moldova’s President Maia Sandu said on On Monday evening that accelerating the European integration process is more important than ever for the country.

“Our partners and friends fully support our right to decide our own destiny and to move forward on the path of European integration. (…) We will continue our efforts to anchor the Republic of Moldova within the European value space,” Maia Sandu said during a live-streamed press briefing.
