Wednesday, the Regional Health Department announced that no less than 34 civilians have been killed and 29 were injured in the last 24 hours because of the clashes in the Donetsk region, in eastern separatist-Ukraine, between the Ukrainian army and the pro-Russian rebels.

„In the last 24 hours, 34 inhabitants of the region have been killed in battle and 29 others have been injured” stated a source quoted by AFP.

Donetsk city, which had 1 million inhabitants before the hostilities began, is the site of battles that are becoming more intense between the forces of Kiev and the pro-Russian insurgents. Several bombings were heard on Wednesday morning in areas near the city’s outskirts.

On Tuesday, the spokesman for the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council, Andrey Lysenko, declared that the military “surrounded the key cities in Donbas”, area that includes the Donetsk and Lugansk regions, preparing for the final stage of the operation on taking control over Donetsk.
