The ‘Lighthouse of Alexandria’, one of the Seven Ancient World Wonders, will be rebuilt.
It was initially built in 280 B.C. by the Ptolemaic Kingdom and was 137m high. It was the tallest man-made structure in the world for a few hundred years in a row.
In 1323 it suffered great damage due to numerous earthquakes. Now, the Permanent Committee of the Egyptian Antiquities have approved a project that aims to rebuild the famous lighthouse.
The project had been previously submitted by the former governorate of Alexandria, but it did not pass, unfortunately.
Studies have taken place and a plan has already been submitted to the governor in hope of approval.
Stones from the lighthouse’s remains were used to build the Citadel of Quatibay in the year 1480, which is still standing today.
