Romania will set the retirement age for men and women at the same level of 65 years from 2035, according to the pension laws proposed by the Labour Ministry and adopted as part of Romania’s Recovery and Resilience Fund, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu announced after a ruling coalition meeting on Tuesday night, accoding to Euractiv.

Most EU countries already provide equal retirement ages between men and women, with most of the holdouts in central and southeastern Europe.

Romania is now taking steps to reverse the retirement age, which has a standard retirement age set at 65 for men and 61 for women.

However, in line with the EU Recovery and Resilience Facility, Romania is preparing to have its laws reflect a unified retirement age of 65 for both men and women from 2035.

The minimum contribution period required for both sexes is 15 years, with a full contribution period of 35 years for both women and men.

Those who wish to continue working after retirement can work until 70 as long as they have their employer’s consent.

Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu aims for the new pension law to take effect on 1 January 2024.

He expressed confidence that the new law would be passed in parliament by the end of November and implemented from 1 January.
