On Thursday, North Korea saluted the aggression on the US Ambassador in Seoul, injured with a melee weapon by a nationalist militant, claiming it is a “just punishment” in a time when South Korea and the US are conducting joint military maneuvers, AFP reports.

„A just punishment for American warriors” titrated the KCNA official agency, just hours after the assault, perceived by the Pyongyang regime as “an act of resistance” towards the American presence in the Korean Peninsula.

The US Ambassador in South Korea, Mark Lippert, was injured on Thursday in Seoul with a melee weapon, by a nationalist who opposes the military alliance between his country and the US.

American President Barack Obama called the ambassador to wish him a “speedy recovery”, said Bernadette Meehan, spokesperson of the National Security Council (NSC). The State Department firmly condemned the attack, considering it “an act of violence”.

The 42 year old diplomat was successfully operated on two deep cuts on his cheek and his right hand and he is stable, indicated the surgeons. He will remain two or three days under observation in the hospital.

„Doing well&in great spirits”, assured Mark Lippert on his Twitter account after the surgery.

The attacker, armed with a kitchen knife of about 25 centimeters, jumped him at the beginning of a reunion at the Sejong Cultural Institute in downtown Seoul.

Police identified the suspect as Kim Ki-Jong, a 55 year old man sentenced after throwing a stone at Japan’s Ambassador in Seoul in 2010.
